Dear “Blackbirds” -

I am so happy to hear about the community you are building – to give yourselves the chance to appreciate the wealth of other films and other cultures that exist around the world.

It is very exciting to me that we live in an age when we can learn from other people, and we don’t even have to travel across the planet to visit everyone. Film is a very rich universe – a filmmaker can spend many years filming many hours with many people…. and then they bring us that whole world in just an hour or two. How lucky we are to live in a time when this is possible.

I had a wonderful time when I visited Japan for the opening of this film… although in some small way, I had already experienced parts of Japan before I came – because some of the world’s classic beautiful cinema is from Japan, and I had been lucky enough to see many Japanese films.

As you watch GYPSY CARAVAN, I hope you will enjoy meeting the people on the screen. I found them very brave and beautiful and inspiring. They were also just ordinary people like you and me – loving their families, wanting the best for their children, and struggling to cope with some of the demands of everyday life.

My life would be poorer if I had never spent time with Gypsies, or Romani people. I hope you enjoy getting to know them through your eyes and ears…

世界中の様々な映画、そして様々な文化に触れる機会をもつという、みなさんが創ろうとしているコミュニティのことを知り、大変うれしく思っています。

現代では、わざわざ現地に行ってひとりひとり訪ねなくとも、自分たち以外の人々からいろいろと学ぶことができます。それはとても刺激的なことですね。映画というのはとても贅沢なものです。映画監督は、自分が何年もかけて何人もの人と何時間も撮影した世界を、たった1、2時間にまとめて私たちに見せてくれるのですから。そんなことが可能な時代に生きるというのは何と幸運なことでしょう。

この映画の封切りのときに日本に行くことができて本当によかったと思っています。私は来日する前から日本のことを少し知っていました。というのも、名作といわれる美しい映画には日本映画が少なくないですし、私はそれらを今まで何本も観ていましたから。

「ジプシー・キャラバン」を観て、スクリーンの中の人々との出会いを楽しんでいただけるとうれしいです。彼らは勇敢で美しく、刺激的です。そして同時に、みなさんや私と同じように普通の人です。家族を愛し、子どもにはできるかぎりのことをしてやりたいと願い、毎日の暮らしの中でもがいている、ごくごく普通の人間なのです。

ジプシー／ロマの人々と過ごしてきた時間がなかったら、私の人生はもっとつまらないものだったでしょう。みなさん自身の目と耳で彼らのことを知って、それを楽しんでもらえたらうれしいです。

私の映画を観てもらえて光栄です。ありがとうございます！
